Rocky Gap State Park in western Maryland grew from donated land and state acquisitions between 1963 and 1966, then took shape after the Army Corps of Engineers dammed Rocky Gap Run in 1970 to create Lake Habeeb. Opening in 1974, the 3,000-acre park became known for its white sand beaches, fishing, boating, trails, and a large amphitheater built for a bluegrass festival that never used it. A separate resort development later added a golf course and, after financial struggles and changes in state policy, a casino resort that reopened in 2013. The site now combines public recreation with private hospitality.
