Sillycook Mountain
History
Sillycook Mountain is a summit in Georgia that rises to 2,172 feet, or 662 meters. Though modest in height, it is significant for preserving a Cherokee place-name in the state's landscape. Its name comes from the Cherokee language and means “turtle,” a reference to the mountain’s shape rather than to any person or commemorative event. The mountain stands as a small but enduring example of how local visual impressions and Indigenous language shaped the naming of places in Georgia.
