Wonder Cave lies in the Balcones Fault, formed by a prehistoric earth shift. It is said to have been a campsite of Indians and Spaniards, especially priests who planted anaqua trees in the area. Legend holds that robber gangs in the 1820s cached Camino Real booty there. In 1893, Mark A. and Elizabeth Burleson Bevers discovered it for Anglo-Texas after a water well drill fell 158 feet at their home there. About 1900, it became the first commercially opened cave in the state when W. S. Davis gave guided tours by candlelight. In 1916, A. B. Rogers bought it for $50 and a gray horse and spent his lifetime in its discovery and development.
