Lockington Covered Bridge crossed the Great Miami River near Lockington, Ohio, and stood as a notable example of mid-nineteenth-century timber bridge engineering. Built in 1848 with the Long Truss system, it extended about 170 feet in two spans and featured wooden siding, a wood-shingled roof, timber framing, and cut-stone abutments. As the nearby Miami and Erie Canal sustained local prosperity, the bridge became part of the area’s historic landscape and later gained added significance as one of Shelby County’s oldest surviving bridges, the only covered bridge still in its original location, and one of only eight Long Truss covered bridges in Ohio. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1975, it closed in 1985 after severe deterioration and was destroyed by fire in 1989.
