During the first Kentucky raid, Confederate Gen. J.H. Morgan's cavalry, returning from Cynthiana, burned the Dix River bridge above here and camped on July 20, 1862. Confederate forces also burned 120 U.S.A. wagons here and at Somerset. After the Battle of Perryville on Oct. 8, 1862, Confederate forces retired to Bryantsville and then retreated in two columns to Tenn., with one column moving through here.
