Steven's Creek Heritage Preserve is a four hundred thirty-four-acre protected area in western South Carolina near Clarks Hill, spanning parts of McCormick and Edgefield counties. It is significant for its concentration of rare plant and animal species, including Webster's salamander and the Miccosukee gooseberry, and for the unusual plant community on its bluffs. Scientific surveys beginning in 1957 documented several plant species not previously recorded in the state and others known from only one other South Carolina site. Its striking botanical diversity is linked to uncommon soils, including near-neutral bluff topsoils, alluvial silt loams, and acidic upland soils that support varied habitats.
