Mount Wilder is a remote, rugged peak in Washington’s Olympic Mountains, deep in Olympic National Park at the southern end of the Bailey Range. Its steep slopes rise dramatically above the Elwha Valley, and runoff from the mountain feeds the Goldie River and other tributaries of the Elwha River. The mountain stands in the Olympics’ wet marine west coast climate, with heavy rain, snowy winters, and clearer summers. It also has a curious naming history: during the 1889–90 Seattle Press Expedition it was first called Mount Barnes, but that name later attached to a different nearby peak, while the origin of the name Wilder remains unknown. Its geology reflects the broader formation and glacial shaping of the Olympic range.
