A steam-powered flour mill was built here in 1880 by Albert Papst, and a millstone from it, believed to have come from France, survives from the site. Fire destroyed the four-storied mill in 1881. H.W.C. Nelson, a Forty-Niner, banker, and rancher, owned the mill.
