Brigadier General James Kemp McLaughlin, a Braxton County native, was a World War II veteran who served from 1941 to 1945, piloted 39 combat missions with the 8th Air Force, and later founded and commanded the West Virginia Air National Guard from 1947 to 1977. He was also recognized as a community leader and was remembered as "...a World War II hero and West Virginia legend..."
