Fort Totten State Historic Site preserves one of the region’s most intact former frontier army posts and the later Fort Totten Indian Industrial School on Devils Lake in North Dakota. Established in 1867 after the Dakota War of 1862 and the creation of the Devils Lake Indian Reservation, the post was built for military control, aid to the displaced Dakota people now known as the Spirit Lake Tribe, and protection from raids. It expanded into a substantial brick complex but saw little combat and was decommissioned in 1890. The property then became a federal boarding school that operated until 1959, preserving two linked histories of military occupation and Native American assimilation.
