Desolation Canyon is a long, remote gorge on Utah’s Green River, extending south between the Tavaputs plateaus to the Roan Cliffs before the river enters Gray Canyon. Its immense scale, with depths of more than 5,000 feet, and its broad riparian alluvial fans have supported human use for thousands of years. Fremont and Ute rock art, Fremont granaries, and remnants of homesteads, including Rock Creek Ranch established by the Seamount family in 1914, preserve that history. The canyon also figured in John Wesley Powell’s 1869 expedition and gained national historic recognition in 1968. Today it is widely known for an 83-mile multi-day river trip with numerous class II and III rapids.
