Organized in 1840 as New Hope Baptist Church, the church's name changed to Shadnor in 1853. The original log structure, which stood a short distance north of the present one, was a prominent landmark during the August 1864 Federal foray to cut the West Point Railroad in this vicinity and the Macon Railroad at and near Jonesboro. On August 28 and 29, several miles of the Atlanta and West Point Railroad were destroyed, and Shadnor Baptist Church was also destroyed. On August 30 and 31, the Federal armies moved east toward Jonesboro, with Howard’s Army of the Tennessee going from Shadnor by way of Bethsaida Church, the 14th Army Corps from Red Oak by way of Shoal Creek Church, and the 4th and 23d from Red Oak to Rough and Ready.
