On May 24, 1864, McPherson’s 15th and 16th A.C. [US] left Euharlee Creek at Aragon in Polk County and passed through Van Wert along the route of present State Highways 101 and 6. Turning east toward Yorkville in Paulding County, the troops camped at Raccoon Creek near here. At this stage of the Federal march to outflank Johnston’s forces [CS] at Allatoona, McPherson held the extreme right. Next on the left was Davis’ 2d division, 14th A.C. [US], which turned east at Van Wert on May 25 to reach Dallas by way of Bishop’s Mill.
