Standing at the northeast end of Belle Isle in Detroit, the William Livingstone Memorial Light was completed in 1930 as an Art Deco tribute to William Livingstone Jr., a prominent advocate for Great Lakes shipping. Designed by Géza Maróti and built by Albert Kahn, it is the only marble lighthouse in the United States and one of only two memorial lighthouses in Michigan. The Georgia marble structure honors Livingstone through both its purpose and sculptural details, while its lantern reused equipment from Belle Isle’s earlier lighthouse. After years of decline and vandalism, it was restored in the 1990s and still serves as both navigational aid and memorial.
