This yellow buckeye stands 109 feet tall, with a crown of 60 feet, a circumference of 144 inches, and an age of approximately 150 years. The name Buckeye comes from Native American folklore that the nut of the buckeye tree resembles the eye of a buck deer, a buck eye. Native Americans also roasted, peeled, and mashed the buckeye nut, which they called Hetuck, into a nutritional meal. In 1841, General William Henry Harrison, an Ohio senator, ran for President using as campaign symbols a string of Buckeyes and a log cabin decorated with raccoon skins. His campaign song called Ohio the "Bonnie Buckeye State," and as a result Ohio citizens became known as Buckeyes. On October 2, 1953, the buckeye tree officially became the state tree. Folklore also holds that the buckeye nut brings good luck, and many people carried them in their pockets or made necklaces to wear.
