Moon Falls, also spelled Moonfalls, is a waterfall on the western edge of Oregon’s Umpqua National Forest in the Cottage Grove Ranger District. About fifty miles from Oakridge, it is reached by an easy paved foot trail within the Layng Creek Municipal Watershed, where overnight camping is prohibited. Alex Creek drops about one hundred feet over a sharp basalt protrusion, spreading into a broad, curtain-like cascade for nearly the full descent before entering the pool below. The falls are strongest in winter, when the creek flows most heavily, and usually carry much less water later in the summer.
