Bohemia Mountain, a 5,994-foot peak in Oregon’s Cascade Range within the Umpqua National Forest, offers a summit trail, broad views of major Cascade peaks on clear days, and nearby camping. It is also central to the history of the Bohemia mining district. Near the trailhead stands Bohemia City, now a ghost town with surviving buildings and mining equipment from a once-busy settlement. The district was named for James “Bohemia” Johnson, a Czech immigrant who discovered gold here in 1863, leading to a mine and settlement by 1866. The mountain’s cool, snowy winters, short growing season, and summer wildflowers add another distinctive layer to its character.
