The Central Plaza lay in the oldest section of the pueblo, where rooms surrounding the plaza may once have stood as high as three stories. Traditionally, the plaza symbolized the Center of the Universe and played an integral part in the lives of the people who lived there. The area was also a location for kivas, ceremonial structures used for religious purposes. In Hopi oral tradition, the kiva was always the most important area of the village.
