Harker Canyon in eastern Washington was carved by a tributary of the Spokane River near Davenport, where the river broadens into the Spokane Arm of Franklin D. Roosevelt Lake. Only a small section at the canyon’s mouth lies within Lake Roosevelt National Recreation Area, while the rest is private land. The canyon extends about 5.6 miles from the Spokane River northward to higher ground in the south, rising from about 1,350 feet to around 2,720 feet. Wildfire has also shaped the canyon, including an August 2005 fire that burned 1,570 acres in five days. Its homes are mainly cottages and seasonal vacation residences, with some year-round occupancy.
