Big Meadows of Lovelock was a famous desert oasis on the Emigrant Trail's Humboldt River Route that made possible the crossing of the Forty-Mile Desert. In 1853, William R. Brown praised its grass as the best he ever saw, better than any meadow in the states, and noted that many campers were there cutting grass with scythes.
