The Lightning Field is Walter De Maria’s 1977 land art installation on a remote plateau in western New Mexico, where 400 stainless steel poles form a precise grid across the landscape. Commissioned and maintained by Dia Art Foundation, the work was designed as an extended experience shaped by isolation, weather, light, and time rather than a brief viewing. Although the poles appear level, their varying heights compensate for uneven ground to create a unified horizontal effect. Known as much for subtle atmospheric changes as for rare lightning strikes, the installation has had lasting cultural influence and has required ongoing preservation of both the work and its undeveloped surroundings.
