About 100 Clinton Countians served in Operation Desert Storm. SSG John Schenck, Jr., repaired F-15 Eagles with the 1st TFW, the first unit deployed to the Persian Gulf in response to the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait in August 1990. SSG Barry Hill, awarded the Soldiers Medal for Heroism, SGT Dana Confer, SGT William Donahay, SGT Robert Moore, SGT David Houdeshell, and SPC Kim Poorman served with the 442nd FSC and provided combat service support to units of the XVIII Airborne Corps. LTJG Charles Moore, Jr., and AQ2 David R. Flack served in the Red Sea and in the Persian Gulf aboard the USS America, the only aircraft carrier to operate on both sides of the Arabian Peninsula during Desert Storm. MAJ Thomas L. Gummo, an F-4G pilot with the 480th TFS, attacked surface-to-air missile sites. SSG Thomas E. Tarantella served with the XVIII Airborne Corps, 39th Field Artillery, the first fully airborne 155mm FA unit.
