Home of Conrad Weiser, 1729-1760
Womelsdorf, Pennsylvania
History
Conrad Weiser was a churchman, counsellor, soldier, Indian interpreter, agent, diplomat, and the first judge of Berks County. Many conferences with Indian chiefs, missionaries, colonial governors, and leaders were held here. His children were raised here, including his eldest daughter Anna Maria, who married Rev. Henry Melchoir Muhlenberg, the "Patriarch of the Lutheran Church in America." He died here on July 13, 1760, and was buried in the nearby family plot with his father, his wife, several children, and a number of friendly Indian chiefs. He served the Colonies so ably as an Indian interpreter and diplomat that he is regarded as the pivotal man who wrought this country under Anglo-Saxon versus Latin civilization.
