West and East Mitten Buttes are prominent sandstone formations in Monument Valley Navajo Tribal Park in northeastern Arizona near the Utah line. Often called the Mittens, they are famous for resembling giant inward-turned mittens when viewed from the south and for helping form one of the valley’s most recognizable skylines with nearby Merrick Butte and Sentinel Mesa. East Mitten rises slightly higher than West Mitten, and both reveal the region’s layered geology, from Organ Rock Shale up through de Chelly Sandstone, Moenkopi Formation, and Shinarump Conglomerate. They are also known for the brief seasonal Mitten Shadow, when West Mitten’s shadow falls across East Mitten at sunset.
