Buttonwood was built in 1840 by Reverend Arthur B. Bradford, a descendant of William Bradford of the Mayflower. A powerful abolitionist, consul to China, prolific author, minister, and founder of the Free Presbyterian Church, Bradford made it a gathering place where many famous abolitionists met in the 1850 era.
