In 1854 Father Francis X. Pierz offered the first mass in this vicinity. In 1877 Father Leo Winter, O.S.B., erected a chapel in honor of the Assumption of B.V.M. to avert a grasshopper plague. On June 28, 1894, a tornado destroyed the chapel. In 1951, during the pastorate of Father Victor Ronellenfitsch, O.S.B., members of the community and other friends rebuilt it.
