Horton Point Light stands on a bluff above Long Island Sound in Southold, New York, where it continues to serve navigation and also operates as a museum. Although commissioned by President George Washington in 1790, the present lighthouse was not built until 1857, after the federal government bought the site in 1855, and William Sinclair became its first keeper. The white stuccoed structure combines a square tower and keeper’s house and rises prominently above the water. Automated in 1933 and later altered by shoreline changes, it was acquired by the Southold Park District in 1934, restored beginning in 1976, relit in 1990, and listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1994.
