In July 1939, Albert Einstein and David Rothman met at this store and house, beginning a unique friendship. They spent time together discussing topics of the day and playing chamber music. On August 2, 1939, Albert Einstein's famous letter to Franklin D. Roosevelt was sent and mailed from Southold, and it is believed that this letter led to the development of the Atomic Bomb. Einstein later wrote to Rothman that his summer in Southold in 1939 was "the happiest summer ever".
