In the early 1900's, when Cliffside Mill was built, a bell tower was erected to house a bell that stood above the mill and overlooked the town. The people of Cliffside named it the "Get Up Bell," and its daily ringing signaled the town's schedule: 5:30 A.M. to get up, 6:30 A.M. to leave home for work, 6:50 A.M. as ten minutes before start-up time, 12:00 Noon for lunch, 12:50 P.M. as ten minutes until returning to work, and 6:00 P.M. as the end of the work day. The bell has not been in use since the late 40's, but it remains a monument to the town and people of Cliffside Mills.
