John and Elizabeth Carroll Gwaltney of Virginia settled here in the 1700s, building four log rooms with an outside dirt-floor kitchen. Elizabeth's father, Charles Carrol of Wales, was among the signers of the Declaration of Independence. John and Elizabeth had 14 children. During the Civil War, seven of their children went to the North and seven remained in the South. Noted for its show horse Kentucky Squirrel, the 200-acre farm has remained in the Gwaltney family for over two centuries.
