Safe House Black History Museum in Greensboro, Alabama, centers the rural Black Belt’s role in the civil rights movement through the experiences of local activists and communities. Founded in 2002 by Theresa Turner Burroughs, it occupies former shotgun houses in the Depot neighborhood, including her family’s three-room home, which sheltered Martin Luther King Jr. on March 21, 1968, while the Ku Klux Klan sought him. Its collection connects local protest history to national events and to the region’s longer history of slavery. Renovation and preservation efforts have recognized its importance, even as it has operated with limited resources and largely appointment-based visits.
