Pinnacle Mountain State Park, just outside Little Rock, preserves Pinnacle Mountain and the bottomlands of the Big Maumelle and Little Maumelle rivers as a major natural landmark and recreation area in central Arkansas. The mountain, once known as Mamelle, gave rise to the name Maumelle still used for nearby rivers and the city. Long before the park was created, the area drew visitors and later saw quarrying for sandstone and shale, including material used for the Lake Maumelle dam. Authorized in 1973, the park now includes heavily used summit and base trails, the Arkansas Arboretum, and mountain biking routes.
