In 1837, Osceola and several other Seminole representatives arrived at a location about one mile south of Fort Peyton to meet with the U.S. Government and begin peace negotiations, although the exact location is unknown. Although Osceola carried a flag of truce, Brigadier General Joseph Hernandez captured him and all other members of the tribe gathered there. The U.S. Army took the captives to St. Augustine and imprisoned them at Fort Marion, the Castillo de San Marcos. After several of the prisoners escaped, Osceola was transferred to Fort Moultirie in South Carolina, where he died from illness.
