During the Second Seminole War (1835-1842), in 1837, Osceola and several other representatives from the Seminole Tribe were captured about one mile south of Fort Peyton by U.S. government forces after being lured by the prospect of peace negotiations. General Thomas Sidney Jesup commanded Brigadier General Joseph Hernandez to capture Osceola and all who had gathered there even though they carried a flag of truce. The U.S. Army marched the captives to St. Augustine and imprisoned them at Fort Marion, the Castillo. After several prisoners escaped, Osceola was transferred to Fort Moultrie in South Carolina, where he died of illness in 1838.
