Lockwood Cemetery was set aside from land settled by Gordon C. Jennings, his wife Catherine, and their four children, who came from Missouri in 1833 as part of Stephen F. Austin’s Little Colony. Gordon, who lived from 1782 to 1836, was the oldest defender to die at the Alamo. Their daughter Catherine, who lived from 1825 to 1911, was remembered for “The Ride of Katie Jennings,” when as a small child she rode horseback to warn neighbors of the invading Mexican army. In 1843 she married Sylvester Lockwood, who lived from 1813 to 1889. Their granddaughter, L.L. Lockwood, who lived from 1868 to 1869, is the earliest burial of record, and the site is honored and cared for by the descendants of these Texas pioneers.
