Pierre S. du Pont graduated from MIT with a degree in chemistry and studied subjects including mechanical drawing, water analysis, and physics. Visits to World's Fairs at the turn of the 20th century introduced him to new technologies, which inspired him to enhance beautiful spaces at Longwood. Working methodically with his electrical engineer Russell Brewer, he experimented with the latest pumps, nozzles, and lights, often collaborating with manufacturers to create something new. Du Pont personally annotated 56 pages of calculations and test results in developing Longwood's biggest and most spectacular hydraulic display, the Main Fountain Garden, whose technical complexity has led it to be regarded as an engineer's garden.
