Longwood's carillon sits atop a stone Chimes Tower that founder Pierre du Pont began building in 1929 after seeing a similar structure in France. The tower rises 61 feet, and its original chimes were replaced in 1956 with a 32-note electronic carillon. In 2000, Royal Eijsbouts of Asten in The Netherlands crafted a new 62-bell carillon. Its largest bell is almost 6 feet in diameter and weighs 6,908 pounds, while its smallest bell is 6 inches in diameter and weighs 20 pounds. The carillon plays automatically on the hour, and visiting carillonneurs perform live concerts from spring through fall.
