Cambridge Junction was the meeting point of the Chicago Turnpike, which ran between Detroit and Chicago and had been an Indian trail before 1700, and the Monroe Turnpike, which came from Lake Erie. At this corner stood the old Walker Tavern, built in 1833 and still standing, a famous wayside inn where James Fenimore Cooper and family, Daniel Webster, Harriet Martineau, and other notables stayed at various times.
