Cambridge Junction Historic State Park in southern Michigan preserves the transportation history of one of the region’s main overland travel corridors. Its centerpiece, Walker Tavern, served as an important stagecoach stop on the early nineteenth-century route between Detroit and Chicago before railroads and automobiles changed travel. The eighty-acre park also includes a reconstructed barn with exhibits on work, travel, and daily life in the mid-1800s, and the 1929 Hewitt House Visitors Center, which interprets early auto tourism and the roadside attractions of the Irish Hills. A one-mile trail through wetlands and woods connects the historic buildings with the landscape travelers once crossed.
