In September 1884, the citizens of Penn Township, St. Joseph County, Indiana, erected the Mishawaka Civil War Soldiers Monument to honor the bravery and patriotism of their soldiers and sailors in the war for the preservation of national unity from 1861 to 1865. Its inscriptions invoke the memory of the honored dead and declare that a free, proud, and great nation perpetuates their memories. The monument also affirms that the war for the Union was right and that the Union must and shall be preserved, and it names battlefields and engagements including Shiloh, Mobile, Chickamauga, Vicksburg, Atlanta, Belmont, Arkansas Post, Balls Bluff, Baton Rouge, Champion Hills, Corinth, Chattanooga, Chicasaw Bayou, Dalton, Duval Bluff, Fort Donelson, Huka, Kenesaw, Lookout Mountain, Malvern Hill, Murfreesboro, Missionary Ridge, Nashville, Paducah, Perryville, Pea Ridge, Phillippi, Port Hudson, Pilot Knobb, Pine Bluff, Antietam, Appomattox, Allatoona, Big Bethel, Bull Run, Chancellorsville, Cold Harbor, Chantilly, Cedar Mountain, Fair Oaks, Five Forks, Fort Harrison, Franklin, Front Royal, Fredericksburg, Gettysburg, Hampton Roads, Manassas Junction, Hoovers Gap, Mobile, Petersburg, Richmond, Ringold, Rich Mountain, Roanoke, Savannah, Spotsylvania, Seven Pines, and Wilderness.
