Built in 1948 in South Bend, Indiana, the Herman T. Mossberg Residence is one of only two Frank Lloyd Wright-designed houses in the city and remains privately owned by a grandson of the original clients. Commissioned after Herman Mossberg’s long admiration for Wright’s work, the house emerged from a direct invitation to Taliesin. It belongs to Wright’s mature Usonian period, combining that style with echoes of his Prairie designs in features such as the living room and suspended stair. Gertrude Mossberg influenced notable departures from Wright’s usual preferences, and careful stewardship has preserved the house as one of his best-maintained residences.
