A depot was built here at a siding on the Western North Carolina Railroad in 1859. The village was organized as Catawba Station in 1872 and became a market center for locally produced tobacco and flour. It was incorporated as the Town of Catawba in 1893 and served as a base for building the nearby Lookout Shoals Dam in 1914.
