Named after Abraham Lincoln and built in 1913 from the east coast to the west coast, the Lincoln Highway ran from New York City to San Francisco through 13 states as the first transcontinental highway. Routed along many main streets, it gained the nickname "Main Street of America," including in Nevada. The Boy Scouts of America placed 3000 markers, one for each mile along the route, each featuring a bronze medallion of the late president. Nevada had long been a town on the move: it was a stop on westbound wagon trails, the railroad came through it as rail travel moved west, and the 1908 New York to Paris Race also passed through. Nevada and a point eight miles east are the only intersecting points of the Lincoln and Jefferson Highways, making it the center point of two continental highways. Nevada is the only town on the Lincoln Highway to hold a commemorative festival every year honoring the highway.
