Skunk River Greenbelt is a protected corridor in central Iowa centered on a roughly 10-mile trail system between Story City and Ames. Created through a public-private partnership, it follows the Skunk River south of Story City to McFarland Park in northern Ames, linking river scenery, natural areas, and recreation sites, including several state properties. The greenbelt supports off-road biking, primitive camping, public hunting, and river access for canoeing, kayaking, and tubing, with additional spur trails and a larger network at McFarland Park. Its appeal also includes wildlife such as beavers, coyotes, wild turkeys, deer, muskrats, foxes, and possibly otters.
