Zeller Peak is a 7,426-foot summit at the northern end of the Big Hatchet Mountains in New Mexico's Bootheel, within the Big Hatchet Mountains Wilderness Study Area managed by the Bureau of Land Management. Visible from Highway 81 despite its remote location, it is especially striking for its steep rise above the surrounding basins, climbing roughly 2,400 feet above Playas Valley in one mile and about 2,000 feet above Hachita Valley in half a mile. Its name was officially adopted in 1979 to honor geologist and naturalist Dr. Robert A. Zeller Jr., whose long study of the range made him a leading authority on its geology.
