Skeleton Canyon in the Peloncillo Mountains near the Arizona–New Mexico line connected the Animas and San Simon valleys and long served as a route between the United States and Mexico. Once called Guadalupe Canyon, it took its later name from the bones left by cattle drives and became notorious in the late 19th century for smuggling, raids, and killings. Violence there included attacks on Mexican Rurales, the killing of Mexican smugglers, an Apache attack on Fourth Cavalry troopers, and later frontier murders and shootouts. Its greatest historical significance is as the place of Geronimo’s final surrender to General Nelson A. Miles on September 4, 1886.
