In the 18th century, Moravian settlers from Europe established a communal society here as part of an international religious network and social experiment. The surviving buildings and industrial structures are outstanding examples of German Colonial architecture and Moravian town planning, and the site has been designated a National Historic Landmark for its national significance in commemorating the history of the United States of America.
