In 1917, MAJ George D. Green, a doctor at the Lock Haven Hospital, organized the 305th Ambulance Company, a group of about 200 local volunteers including SGT Clyde A. Stouck, PFC Linford W. Rogers, and PVT William H. Raymond, one of the few African Americans who were allowed to serve in a white unit in the segregated Armed Forces of the time. In all, about 1,500 Clinton County men and women served in the war. Ruby Emery Wright, Maude Albright Moquin, and Elizabeth Kelsey Connelly were among those who served in France as nurses with the Army and Red Cross. 62 men lost their lives. PVT Howard B. Wilt, 109th Field Artillery, 28th Division, was killed on September 19, 1918, during the Oise-Aisne Offensive. PFC Ira C. Keller, 8th Machine Gun Battalion, 3rd Division, was killed at the Second Battle of the Marne on July 15, 1918. He was awarded a posthumous Silver Star.
