Fort Shantok, on the Mohegan Indian Reservation in Montville, Connecticut, was the principal Mohegan settlement from 1636 to 1682 and the political and sacred center associated with sachem Uncas. In 1645, the Narragansetts besieged the fort, but withdrew after Lt. Thomas Leffingwell led an English force that brought supplies to its defenders. The site also contains more than 100 identified graves and is archaeologically important for preserving rare Native American ceramics in southern New England, helping scholars trace Indigenous migration patterns, including those of the Pequots. Returned to Mohegan ownership in 1995, it is preserved today as a local park.
