Slater Memorial Museum in Norwich, Connecticut, is a historic art museum on the Norwich Free Academy grounds and a notable late nineteenth-century building in the Chelsea Parade Historic District. Designed by Stephen C. Earle in the Richardsonian Romanesque style, it was commissioned by William A. Slater in memory of his father, John Fox Slater. Construction began in 1885, the building was dedicated in 1886, and it opened in 1888. Its original collection of 227 plaster casts of ancient and Renaissance sculpture remains a major feature and forms one of the largest surviving plaster-cast collections in the United States. The museum later expanded into broader artistic and historical collections, with the Converse Art Gallery added in 1906.
